The citizen requesting help was a draconic being named Garr, who reported that one patron had attacked another. I entered to find a humanoid person with feline ears and tail, named Ryuami, throwing a chair at a heavily-armed gnoll ((Urau`auk)). A magically-assisted sketch of the gnoll follows this report. Ryuami immediately stood down, but when I insisted that the patrons explain the situation, the gnoll lifted a crossbow and shot at me. I attempted to restrain him with a spell, but the bolt hit me in the upper left arm and my spell missed its target. The gnoll escaped through the kitchen, and my wound prevented me from giving chase. I took reports from the patrons at the scene. Evidently, the gnoll had attacked Ryuami without provocation upon entering, and Ryuami had only fought to defend himself. Ryuami offered to pay for the chair he had damaged in the fight, and I instructed him to speak with Dulcina concerning that. Garr corroborated the story, and no other patrons disagreed. I requested that they file any further information at the Guardhouse and then reported for healing. The healer reports that my wound will take some time to heal, so I have placed a separate request for a leave of absence from active patrolling for the recommended healing period. I will most likely be on desk duty if any further information is required. This gnoll shows skill with weapons and no reluctance to attack Guardfolk. He may not speak Common. I encourage great caution when dealing with this individual. Message-ID: 22.XII.479 Responding to a report of strange noises and screams coming from the area of the Royal Church, I came upon what appeared to be three bodies. Said bodies were mutilated beyond recognition and appear to have been dismembered and partially devoured. The ears had been removed from all three victims. The victims seemed to be a family consisting of one adult male, one adult female, and one female child, age 8-10. My attempt to ascertain the identity of the victims was hindered by the fact that their faces had been rendered unrecognizable by the assailant. The few accounts I was able to gain of the attack spoke of barking noises, growling, and screaming (presumably that of the victims). Canine footprints, larger than that of domestic dogs, were abundant at the scene, suggesting more than one assailant. The tracks originated from the north and lead back in the same general direction. Given Spellcaster Heatherdown's report of the gnoll attack at the King's Inn the same night, it will be assumed that the attacks are somehow related until some evidence suggests otherwise. All members of the Guard are urged to exercise extreme caution on their patrols, especially Guards whose patrols encompass the darker hours of the night. The horrific nature of the attack and the witnesses' accounts, coupled with the tracks noted at the scene, suggest a small group, no more than four in number. The threat of these creatures is a very real one, and the danger to the citizens of Drache cannot be overstated. In-Reply-To: Message-ID: <672112.96258.qm@web58808.mail.re1.yahoo.com> As I work both shifts, I want it briefed all by the Sergeants that our Armsman are to engage the public on the streets.? Ask questions of any irregular activity or unusually well armed individuals that seem out of place meandering around the city.? I want any suspicious behavior to be confronted immediately.? Make sure you remain cautious, but don't provoke sketchy individuals into otherwise violent behavior or confrontations.? While I'm well aware of our staffing levels, especially in the graveyard shift, it is increasingly important that we keep an eye and ear out for each other.? A call for backup may not always be heard or get out.? Look after your fellow Armsman and most importantly, be safe. If a suspect has attacked a member of Law Enforcement before, it is presumed they will continue to do so in future encounters.? If you spot this gnoll, call for backup and wait if possible.? If he becomes aware of your presence and you feel you are now in immediate danger, proceed with extreme caution. The bolt is in poor repair, of very crude manufacture, with a broad, blunt head -- presumably designed for maximum pain and crippling effect rather than a swift kill. My divinations suggest that the bolt was originally purchased locally, but changed hands about a week ago. This transfer was accompanied by strong feelings of fear and pain, along with impressions of screams and the rending of flesh. My examination suggests that this gnoll or gnolls, and possible accomplices, are not part of a larger force; I would conjecture that they are scavengers, working in a small group and collecting supplies as they go. If the gnolls were part of an army, their equipment would probably be of foreign manufacture, and possibly better-crafted. The divination also confirms what we have seen before: these criminals have little respect for the law and eat the flesh of sentient beings. Please note that this evidence is purely circumstantial. I would not suggest that it be used as a reason to be off-guard. I hope that it is helpful in the continuing investigation. By my hand, Spellcaster Peony Heatherdown of the Upper Darian
